Raymond Grayer Hassell Sr., known affectionately to all as Raymond, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023, at the age of 79.

Born on June 11, 1944, in the coastal town of Beaufort, North Carolina. Raymond was the loving husband of Susan Hassell, and together they created a life filled with shared laughter and enduring love.

Raymond was a man whose life was characterized by an enduring optimism, a passionate spirit, and a loving heart. He closed his final chapter in Morehead City, North Carolina, surrounded by loved ones. Raymond's journey through life was marked by his academic and athletic prowess. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he not only earned a Bachelor of Arts in History but also left an indelible mark on the basketball court. His time playing for the Tar Heels was a source of great pride and joy, and the discipline and teamwork he learned there informed much of his approach to life. After his graduation, Raymond's love for basketball remained a constant, and he could often be found either on the court playing pickup games or passionately cheering on his alma mater during the college basketball season. His love of basketball extended beyond the university and sports became a way to connect with his grandchildren.

Raymond found solace and joy on the golf course and cycling trails. His adventurous spirit and commitment to an active lifestyle reflected his belief that every moment should be embraced with enthusiasm. Those who knew Raymond would unanimously agree that the words optimistic, passionate, and loving were not just descriptors but the very core of his being. His optimism was infectious; he had an uncanny ability to see the silver lining in every cloud and to encourage others to do the same. His passion was evident in everything he did, whether it was debating historical perspectives or teaching his grandchildren, the finer points of a jump shot.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Susan Hassell; daughter Kimberly Rigg, son-in-law, David Rigg; grandchildren Connor Rigg, Mandi Rigg, Brittany Rigg, Gray Hassell, and Grace Hassell.
