Ernst Louis Hayman, Jr., 89, of Beaufort died on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Ernst was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 11, 1934. The third child of Rose Hayman and Ernst Hayman, Sr.
Ernie (as he is known by friends and neighbors) served four years in the Navy in the 1950’s on Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer where he was a Second-Class Petty Officer. After his service in the Navy, he met and married Pearl in San Jose, California, where he worked for Western Electric.
The couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1957 where he attended the University of Wisconsin and earned a degree in chemistry. After college, the couple returned to California, where he was employed by Chevron Chemical Company, Ortho Division, for seventeen years in Richmond, California.
In 1980, at his request, Ernie was “loaned” to an affiliate of Chevron, Saudi-Aramco Oil Company, in Saudi Arabia. He worked in the company’s labs there for 11 years.
Ernie had many interests and hobbies throughout his life including go-kart racing, sports car rallies, running, sailing, and he was always an avid reader. In his early retirement years, Ernie sailed his small, sturdy sailboat on the Atlantic Ocean several times; once with his wife, they were caught in a Northeaster’ on the way to Bermuda.
In his later retirement years, Ernie devoted his energy to many mental health causes. He spent six years on the North Carolina Board of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). He taught many Family-to-Family Classes. He was a member of Consumer and Family Advisory Committee (CFAC) for ten years and worked for North Carolina Families United for four years. He also served and was an advocate for many other mental-health causes as well as working for Onslow County Behavioral Health Services (OCBHS) in Jacksonville as a program coordinator for three years.
Ernie had a personality that would light up a room, always full of laughter, fun, puns, and jokes. He was well loved and will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Pearl Hayman, of Beaufort; son, Ernst Hayman III, of Beaufort; two cherished sisters, Mona Lynn and her husband John of Greendale, Wisconsin and Cora Pruski of Hillsboro, Oregon; brother, Guy Hayman, of Nampa, Idaho. Every holiday Ernie talked with each of them on the phone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ethel Heyward of Milwaukee and Joyce Brown of Idaho Falls.
